I managed a team in the 1990s both managing a licensed 3rd party configuration management tool and also developing configuration management tools.  During this time, a friend, Suzanne Pherigo, and I wrote a book on software configuration management in the mid 1990s.

This book provided a quick, easy-to-read introduction to the advanced concept of configuration management.  As software developers create new applications, they must map each step for later reference and quality checks - like leaving behind a trail of bread crumbs.
